Here’s what typically happens:
Discussion of your goals
You’ll talk about what bothers you—such as jowls, a double chin, or loose neck skin—and what kind of results you’re hoping for. The surgeon will also clarify what’s realistic.
Medical history review to ensure the procedure can be done safely.
Physical examination
The surgeon will examine your face and neck, looking at:
- Skin quality and elasticity
- Fat distribution
- Muscle tone (including neck bands)
- Bone structure and jawline
Recovery
Recovery after a combined face and neck lift happens in stages.
- First few days You’ll likely feel tightness in the face and neck, along with swelling and bruising. Your head may be wrapped in bandages, and small drains are sometimes used briefly to prevent fluid buildup. Discomfort is usually manageable with medication. Rest with your head elevated is important.
- About one week Swelling and bruising peak, then gradually start improving. You may feel numbness or a pulling sensation—this is normal. Stitches or drains (if used) are typically removed within this period. Most people are up and walking around but taking it easy.
- Two to three weeks You’ll start to look much more “normal.” Bruising fades significantly, and swelling decreases enough that many people feel comfortable going out in public. Some residual tightness and mild swelling remain.
- 2–3 months and beyond Subtle swelling continues to improve, and final results become more apparent. Incision lines fade over time, and the skin and tissues relax into a natural position.
Most people take about 2 weeks off from work and social activities, though full healing takes a few months.

Overall, the face and neck look more refreshed and youthful—often like a “well-rested” version of yourself rather than a dramatic change.
